Why Copy Bluray Discs
Why copy Bluray discs?
There are a number of reasons why you might like to be able to copy Bluray movies and other materials from your original DVD/Bluray disc to other media. Perhaps :
-
Original DVDs and Bluray discs get damaged and will not play. Why risk damage to your original disc when you could be playing your own copy Bluray disc? Kids are notorious for being careless with original DVD or Bluray discs, ruining them and necessitating an expensive repurchase of your DVD or Bluray disc. With some discs disappearing from catalogues or only being released periodically (e.g. Disney only release their discs every few years for a limited run), it might not even be possible to easily replace your DVD or Bluray disc. If you copy bluray to use a backup disc, you then protect your original disc from any degradation arising from usage and bad handling. Your copy bluray disc becomes the disc in normal use, meaning that if the kids trash the copy bluray, you can go back to the clean original and make yet another copy bluray disc.
-
You can’t watch your own movie when you want to. How many Bluray players do you have at home? Probably one in the main family room and elsewhere in the house the players are standard DVD players. You probably don’t have a portable bluray player as most portable disc players only accept standard DVD or DivX type formats. So you can’t slip off to another room to watch Bluray. A copy bluray to standard DVD backup version would help in those circumstances.

You want to watch on digital devices (e.g. iPod, iPad, Android based devices with no DVD Drive). We’ve tried, but it seems impossible to fit a Bluray or DVD disc inside your mobile phone ;o). The only option therefore is to copy bluray discs, i.e. decrypt the DVD and convert to a compatible file format that your portable device supports. Some movie studios are helpfully providing copy bluray digital copies along with some DVD/Bluray releases, but these are still rare and may still be tied to playing via PC and unable to be converted because the digital files included also come with Digital Rights Management. Decrypting to copy bluray disc versions of the movie and converting to a suitable file format overcomes this problem.

You have DLNA equipment in your home and want to have a media server containing your movie collection ‘on tap’. With so many TVs being DLNA ready (able to detect home media servers in your network and to play movies, music or photographic slideshows directly from them), you need to have a compatible digital movie file to take advantage of a ready to use library. Decrypting your movie disc and converting to an alternative copy bluray format that your DLNA server supports and adding to the DLNA library will ensure that you have a ready supply of movies to watch at the click of a button.
Is it legal to copy bluray discs?
Please note that we have no knowledge of International law and any information provided here is an educational ‘how-to’ and does not necessarilly confirm that making copy Bluray discs or copy bluray movies in any media is legal in ANY location. Therefore any action you take to decrypt and/or copy Bluray discs to any other media, you do it taking full responsibility for observing any laws that apply to you. The laws can be confusing .. e.g. in some countries it may be legal to make copies under a ‘fair use’ entitlement whereas in other countries it will be illegal to attempt to circumvent the protection placed upon the movie. However, piracy (distributing copies or making copies of discs that you do not own already) is almost certain to be illegal in all locations and is not condoned here. Piracy kills movie production .. do not consider it.
Alternatives to copying Bluray discs
- No upfront purchase cost of DVD/Bluray – cost per disc considerably lower (based on viewing once)
- Massive library of movies to choose from .. virtually every commercial release is already ‘on tap’
- No need to copy Bluray disks to view on certain devices
Cons of subscription service :
- No ownership of the movie
- Limited portability .. requires a device that supports the streaming service due either to DRM on the download or WiFi to stream the data
- May require new television with embedded compatibility (e.g. Lovefilm) or device hooked up to the TV (e.g. PC, Apple TV, Playstation PS3, iPad) that is compatible with the movie download service.
